  • Four Cascians to Perform at Carnegie Hall

This year, four Cascia students will be performing at Carnegie Hall this February as part of the Carnegie Hall Honors Performance Series.   High school students from around the world audition to be a part of this prestigious event.  Students send in recorded audition material during the summer demonstrating their musical abilities in their chosen field.   Then comes the long wait - students don't find out if they are selected until Oct 31!  Those selected are given the honor of performing in an honors group on the famed Carnegie Hall stage in New York City in February.  Cascia has a tradition of sending talented students to this event an this year is no exception.  Travis Guillory and Joseph Barbour were both selected as members of the Carnegie Hall Honors Concert Choir, Camryn Hurley was selected as a member of the Carnegie Hall Honors Women's Choir, and Margaret Barbour was selected as a violinist in the Carnegie Hall Honors Orchestra.  Camryn, Travis, and Joseph will be working diligently on their required music with Mrs. Coonfield throughout the month of January so they are ready for February's performance.  Meanwhile, Margaret will be busy preparing with her violin instructor.  Congratulations to all four of these students for this terrific achievement.

  • Security Update from Headmaster’s Office

    Dear Cascia Community,

As we near the conclusion of our 1st Quarter, I want to provide an update to my previous communication regarding our efforts to enhance the safety of our school community. We have taken a number of steps already in our general review of our policies and procedures.

As previously noted, we have limited access to the building as we continue to study our patterns of ingress and egress from various sides of our complex structure. We have scheduled a site assessment from the School Security Institute under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security. Their review will help us immensely in securing and controlling access to our physical campus. We have also done some work in upgrading our video surveillance system on the campus.

Currently, we are in the process of hiring a full-time director of campus security to coordinate and oversee all aspects of campus safety. This officer, uniformed, armed, and CLEET certified, will provide a more visible presence on campus as both a deterrent and as a resource, will liaison with local law enforcement, and will coordinate with our current security to provide coverage for all events when children are present. We have already begun a program of heightened awareness and training with our faculty and staff in the event of an incident on campus. This new position will continue to develop this training and coordinate all drills in compliance with state law and responsible practice.

The safety of our students is our top priority, and these steps will help to ensure a more secure learning environment so that our mission and our people may continue to thrive.

May God continue to watch over us and keep us in His loving care.

    Feast of St. Augustine

Today the school community celebrated the Feast Day of St. Augustine. Thank you Bishop Konderla for celebrating with us. In his homily, the Bishop shared about how St. Augustine loved the gifts of this world and how he eventually grew to love the giver more. "Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would have not been at all." St. Augustine

  • Sr. Mary Murrihy, SSJ 1925 - 2018

Sr. Mary Murrihy, SSJ Enters Eternal Life

Sr. Mary Murrihy, SSJ, passed away at 6:45 am this morning. Sr. Mary taught Cascia students for 34 years from 1979 -2013.

She was a legend in her own time for many reasons. Just to name a few: she was certified in 18 subjects; she was one of the first females to join the Cascia faculty; she was awarded an Honorary Diploma in 1987 and became the first female to graduate from Cascia Hall. In 1994, the administration of Cascia Hall established the Sr. Mary Murrihy Community Service Award in recognition of her long-term, consistent service to the Cascia Community. The award is given each year at graduation to the senior who, like Sr. Mary, goes above and beyond what is expected or required in service to others.

“Sr. Mary has had a huge impact upon our community,” said Headmaster Fr. Philip Cook. “We mourn her loss and remember her with love.”

Services will be held on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 4:00 pm at the Church of St. Mary in Tulsa.

May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

  • Message from the Headmaster

    Dear Cascia Hall Community,

We’re off to a good start on this our 93rd academic year! It is most appropriate that we began in prayer during our first all-school liturgy on Wednesday celebrating the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. I want to thank all our faculty and staff, especially our maintenance staff, who have worked especially hard to get ready for the start of school. I also want to thank those students in STUCO and those in the committee working on our new House system, including the “parents” and “nannies” for each house. These upperclassmen have been hard at work over the last few weeks of their summertime (!), planning and coordinating activities to welcome our new students and bring new energy to student life this year. Our volleyball teams are off to a great start, despite a leaky gym, and our football team had a great showing against Ft. Gibson this past weekend. Go Commandos! We do indeed have so much to be grateful for.

May God continue to bless our efforts and our community throughout the upcoming year.

  • Theme for the Year--"All In"

The Theme for the Year, "All In," was chosen by Student Council.

"By having this theme we are encouraging the student body to step outside their comfort zones and pursue what they love. To go “ALL IN” means to give everything we have and never hold back. The theme “ALL IN” can apply in and outside the classroom. Student Council believes this theme will help Cascia students feel supported and loved. If we were to encourage every single person to never hold back, we will be in a better community. Student Council hopes to see positive outcomes with students with this theme. We feel it will service as a constant reminder that we are a supportive community. We want to see everyone strive to put forth 100% effort in everything they do."

While at Cascia, he participated in soccer, drama/musical theater, ultimate frisbee, and bowling. He went on to earn his BA in Classics from Missouri State University.

Before taking his vows, Spencer completed a year of pre-novitiate in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, from 2016-2017 while studying at Villanova University. He then completed a year of novitiate in Racine, Wisconsin, from 2017-2018. The novitiate is a year of intense prayer and study as one prepares to make vows. Spencer will continue to renew his vows every year until he makes his solemn profession of vows, which last for the rest of his life. He will now study Theology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

  • Dress Code Message from Dean of Students

    Attention parents and students:

In light of our administrative team’s reinvigorated commitment to dress code enforcement for the upcoming school year, we have received many questions regarding the various aspects of our policy. Specifically, many have asked if a couple types of shoes that were very popular with students last year will be acceptable for students this year, despite the fact that such shoes do not meet the “leather” requirement as stated in the Student Handbook. This notice is being sent to announce that, after careful discussion, the administration has deemed canvas shoes such as those pictured below to be acceptable forms of dress for the upcoming year.

**NOTE: Pictures of canvas shoes that are comparable in design but not an exact match to the ones pictured can be emailed to Jared St. John; they will be considered for approval. Please contact Mr. St. John with any other dress code questions.

  • Letter from the Headmaster

    Dear Cascia Hall Community,

It is out of a sense of obedience and trust that I begin a four year term as the 13th Headmaster at Cascia Hall. Cascia has been serving the Church and the Tulsa community for 92 years. We have a long and proud history, and I feel privileged to be part of it. I have spent 12 of my 21 years as a priest here at Cascia in three separate assignments. All of these years have been spent in the classroom as a teacher of Latin or theology or both. For me, teaching remains at the core of our mission, the reciprocal learning which takes place in the relationship between teacher and student or coach and athlete lies at the heart of who we are and what we do. It is in this encounter between good people that the Truth of who we are and the Truth of God’s love for us is revealed.

The school is in excellent shape, due in large measure to the leadership and guidance of our former headmaster Roger Carter. The school is debt-free, our enrollment is healthy, the climate within the community is upbeat and hopeful, we have an excellent faculty and staff, and wonderful families and students. I am personally grateful to Roger for his example and his assistance during this transition.

In considering our future, I see three areas of greatest need. School safety is at the forefront of our attention, and we are currently reviewing all our safety procedures and enhancing our security measures. Details will be forthcoming soon on our efforts in this regard. Secondly, facilities. We are in desperate need of space – learning space, office space, and storage space. Increased course offerings and new programs in the curriculum and in athletics, coupled with our desire to keep class size to a minimum, have resulted in the creative use of all available space on the campus. (Our theater department has even built a mechanism for storage suspended from the ceiling!) As the curriculum expands and learning styles evolve, so the physical plant needs to evolve and develop as well, while we still seek to maintain a small community. Thirdly, perhaps the most challenging area lies in the spiritual development of our community. Faith in Jesus Christ informs and pervades every aspect of what we do. Student life, school spirit, communication, respect for each other and celebration of our diversity, and outreach to those in need, both within our community and outside of it are all aspects which continually require our attention and support. These areas are at the forefront of our growth as individuals and as a faith community. Of course, there are other important areas as well. Our academic and athletic programs remain as the foundation of our success and continue to evolve as student needs change. Keeping Cascia Hall affordable and balancing expenses while responding to greater financial need are ongoing challenges.

As ambitious (or daunting) as these goals appear, I am enthusiastic and hopeful about the upcoming year. I look forward to working with all of you, as together we strive to do God’s will and build His Kingdom here in midtown Tulsa.

    Peace,

    Fr. Philip Cook, O.S.A., Ph.D.
    Headmaster

As you begin to purchase uniforms for the upcoming school year, please take note that the administration has dedicated much time toward prioritizing the enforcement of the dress code as it is stated in the Student Handbook. As it stands today, we are in the beginning stages of implementing a new system in which student dress code violations will be recorded, tracked, and disciplined diligently. Listed below are two aspects of the Cascia Hall dress code that our administration would like to draw to your attention as each of you begins to shop for your son's or daughter's clothing for the 2018-2019 school year. If you have any further questions regarding the dress code as stated in the Handbook, please consult the link below.

Skirt: Choice of two: Cascia plaid or khaki. Skirts must be of an appropriate and modest length for all situations, including standing, sitting, and using the stairs. The Assistant Principal and/or Middle School Principal will make the final determination of whether a skirt is “appropriate and modest.” For tailoring and alteration purposes, the bottom of the skirt must extend no more than four inches from the floor when kneeling. However, because some students may roll or pull up their skirts after they have been tailored appropriately, the school will use the “appropriate and modest” criteria for enforcement. Students may not roll up their skirts. Please plan to lengthen skirts as necessary as students grow over the years. Repeated non-compliance with these rules may result in a “skirt ban” for the remainder of the semester.

Outerwear: School branded or school team outerwear may be worn over a uniform shirt, along with sweaters and the “ch” fleece as noted below. These may not extend past the bottom of the skirt.

    2018-19 Dean of Students
    Grades 6 - 12

  • Family Photographs at Graduation

    Dear Parents of Seniors:

What a fabulous year we've had with you and your seniors! We are delighted to finish up the year with photographic coverage of your entire graduation evening. We are shooting portraits of the graduates and their families before graduation. Three shooting stations are available on Signup Genius. We will photograph all the graduates prior to the ceremony. They do not need to schedule. If you do not get a chance to sign up, just come to the Dining Hall and get in line, and we'll get your family photographed.  The link to sign up is: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090545a9ab29a0f58-ervin

Please know that this signup is "suggested times" and not exact. So, these time slots are holding a time slot for your family, but could vary by a few minutes.

Signup Genius Instructions:  In the 'COMMENT" space, please put any special needs that would be important for us to know, and add total number of family members. We will photograph any subgroups that you want: Mom and Dad with graduate, add in siblings, add in grandparents, add in extended family. There is no limit to the number of poses! Did I mention that this is a FREE service? We will email and text a link to all of your images after commencement.

In addition to the family portraits, we are also photographing the graduates as a class, as they process in, and when they receive their diplomas and awards. All of these will be available to you. Don't let this free opportunity get by without signing up for family portraits. It's a milestone occasion; everyone is present, dressed up, and you just have to walk a few steps to make it happen.

Please come in the back door by the parking lot. Be sure to have someone save your seats for you. Do not hesitate to call me at Ervin Photography, 918-209-5050, with any questions prior to the graduation. We can't wait for this one-of-a-kind event. Your graduation is so lovely. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!

PLEASE DO NOT SHOOT WITH YOUR OWN CAMERAS OR IPHONES! It sets off our portrait lights and hold us up. We have a lot of families to photograph and very little time to do it. The link to your images will be:  http://bit.ly/2rUPKOf  You will receive an email when this goes live!

Thank you, and we'll see you Friday night,
