Congratulations to Junior Margaret Barbour who has been selected to the 2019 Oklahoma All-State Orchestra.  Selection of instrumentalists was made through an audition process that included orchestra players from throughout the state.  Margaret is one of only 40 violinists chosen.

 

The All-State Orchestra concert will be held in January 2019 at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

The second STEM activity this semester challenged the eighth graders to construct and wire a model for electricity. They were required to design a structure with at least one working light bulb, a circuit, and a power source that is activated by an external switch. Computerized drawings of the profile, circuitry, and calculations for voltage, resistance, and current accompanied each structure. After seeking approval for each design, students worked in cooperative teams to present their model.

We are happy to announce that Mrs. Catherine Hickman will be the long-term substitute for Mrs. Ashley Wood while she is on maternity leave.  Mrs. Hickman is the mother of three Cascia Hall graduates, Annalee, Genny, and Mary Cate Hickman.  She has a Bachelor of Science and a Masters degree from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah.  She has been a substitute here at Cascia Hall for the past four years.  She has a Cascia Hall email while finishing out the semester for the English 9: Comp & Grammar classes:  chickman@casciahall.com.

Those eighth graders currently academically eligible for the NJHS induction in April, 2019, met with Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. Elliott, and Mr. Goldsmith late in October to discuss the other criteria for admission next spring. The faculty members advised the candidates that a demonstration of citizenship, leadership, and character also comprise a student’s requirements for induction into the NJHS. For more specific information, please ask your son or daughter to show you the information sheet which was distributed to each candidate.

Junior Margaret Barbour was selected to participate in The High School Honors Performance Series at Sydney Opera House from July 31 - August 5, 2019. This Performance Series builds upon the heritage of the Carnegie Hall Series and challenges accomplished 9th-12th grade musicians at one of the world’s most recognized and revered performance institutions: the Concert Hall at Sydney Opera House. Selected Finalists will spend six days in Sydney, where they will study under master conductors, experience the highlights of “the Harbour City," and get to know accomplished musicians from around the world. Margaret was also selected to play her violin at Carnegie Hall in February, 2019.

On Friday, November 2, students in all Upper School general chorus classes and performance ensemble spent their class-time learning ASL (American Sign Language). A professional ASL tutor, Meghan Presley, with her student interpreters, Shelby and Roman, spent the day at Cascia teaching the chorus students the ASL for the first verse of “Silent Night”. The students will continue to practice the ASL in class and then incorporate it as part of their Christmas choir concert on December 5. In addition to teaching the students the specific ASL for the verse, Meghan told the students a story in ASL, spoke about her own life experiences, and fielded questions from the students.

PreACT score sheets have arrived!  Mrs. Coleman will be meeting with all freshmen individually over the next couple of weeks to give students their score sheet, their test booklet, and booklet entitled "Using Your PreACT Results".  Please ask your student to share this information with you.

Come, audition for the US Spring Musical! Pirates of Penzance! Compassionate pirates, bumbling policemen, singing sisters, romance, fun, and lots of fabulous music! Don't miss it!

We are doing auditions differently this time. There will be a sign-up sheet on Mrs. Byford's door in the PAC (the PAC Director's office) for a 15 minute slot in which your singing range will be determined and you will read/act out a provided monologue. These auditions will begin on Monday November 5, so come sign up for your slot as soon as you can!

The final regular season home game for Varsity Football is Friday, November 2. This will be Senior Night recognizing Athletic Trainers, Cheer, Cross Country, Pep Band and Football. Please join us for the All School Tailgate from 5:30 - 6:45 p.m. before the game. Then, plan to head to the stadium to cheer on the Commandos at 7 pm. The tailgate will be hosted by the Upper School Boys' and Girls' Basketball parents. Coach Ford and Coach Hightower will be the grill masters.  Hot dogs, chili, and trimmings will be available while they last.

A bridge rehabilitation project is scheduled to begin during the 10 days following October 29 on the bridge at 2600 S. Yorktown. Lane closures may occur. Completion of the project is scheduled for early April 2019. Please seek an alternate route back and forth to school to avoid this construction.

 

 

Juniors and seniors received their Minimester contract and medical form this week.  The contract must be completed and signed by students, parents, and career exploration sponsor/Caritas sponsor.  Students who will be going on the school mission trip or the international study trip will need to turn in a signed contract as well.  All contracts and medical forms are due to Mrs. Coleman by Thursday, November 15.

The Fall Festival at Catholic Charities is an opportunity for the children and family members of Adult Basic Education students to visit the campus, meet their parent's volunteer teachers, and visit their parent’s classrooms.  Fall Festival will be at the CC Education Center at 2450 N. Harvard Ave. in Tulsa on Saturday, October 27 from 11 am to 2 pm.

Dear Cascia Community,

As we near the conclusion of our 1st Quarter, I want to provide an update to my previous communication regarding our efforts to enhance the safety of our school community. We have taken a number of steps already in our general review of our policies and procedures.

As previously noted, we have limited access to the building as we continue to study our patterns of ingress and egress from various sides of our complex structure. We have scheduled a site assessment from the School Security Institute under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security. Their review will help us immensely in securing and controlling access to our physical campus. We have also done some work in upgrading our video surveillance system on the campus.

Currently, we are in the process of hiring a full-time director of campus security to coordinate and oversee all aspects of campus safety. This officer, uniformed, armed, and CLEET certified, will provide a more visible presence on campus as both a deterrent and as a resource, will liaison with local law enforcement, and will coordinate with our current security to provide coverage for all events when children are present. We have already begun a program of heightened awareness and training with our faculty and staff in the event of an incident on campus. This new position will continue to develop this training and coordinate all drills in compliance with state law and responsible practice.

The safety of our students is our top priority, and these steps will help to ensure a more secure learning environment so that our mission and our people may continue to thrive.

Everyone is reminded that Wednesday, October 10, is our annual “testing day” for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. The sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT (preliminary SAT). The PSAT is the qualifying test for juniors for National Merit Scholarship consideration. It is also excellent practice for students before they take the SAT for college admission. Wednesday's Dress Theme was "Home for the Holidays." Some students and teachers elected to wear Holloween costumes, others were dressed for Christmas, and even the Easter Bunny made an appearance. Karaoke was the special activity at Upper School lunches.

Thursday's Dress Theme was "What is this doing in my closet?" The special activity at US lunches was arm wrestling.

The Cascia Hall Alumni Association Annual Homecoming Cookout from 5:00 to 6:45 pm is still on "go." Weather permitting, the cookout will be at the Tennis Court Gazebo area. If it rains, the cookout will be moved to our Dining Hall and Spielmann Gym Lobby area.

Congratulations to senior Olivia Stump who has met the challenge of the United States Congress!  Olivia has earned the Congressional Award Gold Medal. To earn the Gold Medal, each participant must complete at least 400 hours of Voluntary Public Service, which means sharing their time and talent for the betterment of the community, 200 hours of Personal Development, which can include developing social and life skills as well as interests, and 200 hours of Physical Fitness, spent in any way that improves their health and quality of life. Additionally, they must spend at least five days and four nights exploring a new environment or culture. Olivia has been consistently working to achieve this award for over twenty-four months, the minimum time frame to earn the Gold Medal. Olivia did not “win” the award – she EARNED it!

The Cascia community was ALL IN  for the blood drive yesterday.  We had so many donors that the Red Cross had to turn some away and the end. The students were wonderful and very generous, even though some were very nervous. The donors made someone's quality of life much better; they may have even saved a life. Many of the students had very personal reasons for giving. The Red Cross set a goal of 15 donors for a school our size, and we more than doubled that!

Sr. Mary Murrihy, SSJ, passed away at 6:45 am this morning. Sr. Mary taught Cascia students for 34 years from 1979 -2013.

“Sr. Mary has had a huge impact upon our community,” said Headmaster Fr. Philip Cook. “We mourn her loss and remember her with love.”

Services will be held on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 4:00 pm at the Church of St. Mary in Tulsa. 

Dear Cascia Hall Community,

We’re off to a good start on this our 93rd academic year! It is most appropriate that we began in prayer during our first all-school liturgy on Wednesday celebrating the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. I want to thank all our faculty and staff, especially our maintenance staff, who have worked especially hard to get ready for the start of school. I also want to thank those students in STUCO and those in the committee working on our new House system, including the “parents” and “nannies” for each house. These upperclassmen have been hard at work over the last few weeks of their summertime (!), planning and coordinating activities to welcome our new students and bring new energy to student life this year. Our volleyball teams are off to a great start, despite a leaky gym, and our football team had a great showing against Ft. Gibson this past weekend. Go Commandos! We do indeed have so much to be grateful for.

May God continue to bless our efforts and our community throughout the upcoming year.

Cascia Hall is proud to announce that Spencer Thomas took his first vows in the Augustinian Order on August 4, 2018. Spencer grew up in Tulsa and graduated from Cascia Hall in 2011. While at Cascia, he participated in soccer, drama/musical theater, ultimate frisbee, and bowling. He went on to earn his BA in Classics from Missouri State University.

 

Before taking his vows, Spencer completed a year of pre-novitiate in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, from 2016-2017 while studying at Villanova University. He then completed a year of novitiate in Racine, Wisconsin, from 2017-2018. The novitiate is a year of intense prayer and study as one prepares to make vows. Spencer will continue to renew his vows every year until he makes his solemn profession of vows, which last for the rest of his life. He will now study Theology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

August 5 - Parent/Player meetings in Upper School Gymnasium.  Middle School at 6:00 pm followed by equipment check out.  Upper School at 7:00 pm.

August 6 - Practice begins for all football teams at Siegfried Stadium.  Middle School 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.  High School 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm

School physicals and immunization records need to be turned in by August 1.  Students cannot participate in sports, as well as practice, until this information has been received.

Dear Community:

Debora DoniJayne Huerta, mother of Coach Robbie Huerta, our varsity boys' soccer coach, passed away suddenly on July 18. Funeral services will be held at Floral Haven Memorial Chapel today, Monday, July 23, at 3:00pm. Please keep Debora, Coach Huerta, and their family in prayer. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

 

 

Thank you for your support in unifying the Middle School sports program.​

The Cascia Hall soccer team would like to enter a fall league for the 2018 season. Coach Huerta needs a certain number of players to be able to field a team. The games will start in September and take place on Saturdays. More detail regarding games and a weekly practice to come later. This is open to any and all 9-12 grade boys who are not participating in a Cascia fall sport. Players do not have to have been members of the CH Soccer team in the past. All interested players need to sign up by July 10th using the following link: Sign-up for fall soccer.

Skirt: Choice of two: Cascia plaid or khaki. Skirts must be of an appropriate and modest length for all situations, including standing, sitting, and using the stairs. The Assistant Principal and/or Middle School Principal will make the final determination of whether a skirt is “appropriate and modest.” For tailoring and alteration purposes, the bottom of the skirt must extend no more than four inches from the floor when kneeling. However, because some students may roll or pull up their skirts after they have been tailored appropriately, the school will use the “appropriate and modest” criteria for enforcement. Students may not roll up their skirts. Please plan to lengthen skirts as necessary as students grow over the years. Repeated non-compliance with these rules may result in a “skirt ban” for the remainder of the semester.

Outerwear: School branded or school team outerwear may be worn over a uniform shirt, along with sweaters and the “ch” fleece as noted below. These may not extend past the bottom of the skirt.

What a fabulous year we've had with you and your seniors! We are delighted to finish up the year with photographic coverage of your entire graduation evening. We are shooting portraits of the graduates and their families before graduation. Three shooting stations are available on Signup Genius. We will photograph all the graduates prior to the ceremony. They do not need to schedule. As you know, our beloved Headmaster Roger Carter will be leaving Cascia Hall at the end of his eight year term as headmaster on June 30. In consideration for his many years of service to the Catholic education community in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with over 28 of those years at Cascia Hall, an endowed scholarship will be established at Cascia Hall Preparatory School to honor him. The goal will be to raise $100,000 for the Roger Carter Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Congratulations on your Seniors, and my prayers for each of you as this busy season is moving ever faster to graduation!  There are a couple of important reminders for Baccalaureate that I want to share:

Cascia is proud to welcome Jeremy Ford as our new Girls' Basketball coach.  Coach Ford will be an assistant AD along with other duties on campus.  Please welcome Jeremy to our Cascia Hall community!

There will be a meeting this Thursday, May 10, for all girls playing basketball next year. The meeting will take place in the Dining Hall at 3:15 pm. All current 8th-11th grade girls should be in attendance if they plan to play the 2018-2019 season.

Students are to be in the upper level of the dining hall by 7:30 am and no later than 7:45 for 8:00 exams. Students are to be in relaxed dress.

 

All past due student accounts must be paid in full before semester exams begin in order for your student to take semester exams. If your student is sitting for Advance Placement (AP) exams that begin on May 7, the student will not be admitted to any AP exams if any past due amounts are still owed.

The Cascia Hall Science Research Team, led by Mrs. Sally Fenska, earned many first place and special awards at the State Science and Engineering Fair last Thursday and Friday in Ada. At Regional competition in February, the team earned the Regional First Place Team Sweepstakes Award, and all projects advanced to State competition. Here are the results from the State fair.

Deacon Michael Loeffler, who is currently serving as Assistant Principal and Dean of Students, will be joining the Campus Ministry Team. Social Studies Teacher, Jared St. John, will become Dean of Students. Danny Hightower will move from coaching Varsity Girls' Basketball to coaching Varsity Boys' Basketball.

Teens on Board Tulsa (TOBT) is a Cohort of the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI). Its goal is to diversify nonprofits by giving teens the opportunity to serve in a leadership position as an advisor to the board of directors. TOBT is in the process of creating new Youth Advisory Boards and would love to have students from Cascia. More information and applications (due April 14) are available at www.teensonboard.org. Any current sophomores and juniors who are interested in being a part of next January's trip to Greece should be aware that the early enrollment deadline for the trip is this Thursday, March 29th. There are two spots still available for this fantastic trip to a modern land with so many ancient sites! 

Hello Class of 2019 Parents:

Coach Brian Rahilly has resigned as Head Boys' Varsity Basketball Coach. Coach Rahilly notified his team today. He has been our varsity boys’ coach for over 20 years. He has recorded well over 300 wins and taken 7 teams to the state tournament. He brought home Cascia’s only OSSAA boys’ basketball state championship title in 2009. We thank Coach Rahilly for his dedication to our basketball program and the countless number of players’ lives he has touched over the years. Coach Rahilly will remain at Cascia teaching and coaching boys’ golf.

The Cascia Theatre Department has so many props from its many wonderful productions that they have no place to store them. In order to save them for future performances, more storage space is needed. Some of the props are 18 feet tall and 8 feet wide. As well as storing, the department would also like space to repurpose the many different pieces for future productions.  If you own a warehouse or building and have space available, please contact the Office of Advancement at swillmann@casciahall.com or 918.746.2614.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the annual fund matching gift challenge last month.  The original $15,000 matching gift generated $34,975 in additional gifts from 58 donors!  The total amount raised for the annual fund is now $348,716 or 92% of our $380,000 goal.

Senior Night is this Thursday, February 8.  Join us in honoring our five senior basketball players who will be presented between the Varsity Girls' and Boys' games against Rejoice Christian. It is also Chick-fil-A Night! Beginning at 6 pm, the first 100 people who come to the game will receive a free sandwich. Hope to see you there!! Go Commandos!

Those eighth grade students who are currently eligible for induction into the Driscoll Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society have received a written application form which must be completed and turned in by Wednesday, February 14. Meeting this deadline is a requirement to be considered for induction. The Chapel ceremony is scheduled for April.

Applications will soon be accepted for the Saint Francis Health System Student Volunteer Program. This program, open to those aged 14 – 17 years old, begins June 11 and concludes August 10, 2018. Volunteer opportunities are available at Saint Francis Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis. Catholic Charities is looking for a group of teens to help with clean-up from 11:00 pm - 12:30 am on February 10 after Cooking up Compassion.  Please contact Kelly Cassidy at Kcassidy@cctulsa.org or 918-508-7125. 

On Wednesday, January 17, the 9th grade will meet in the PAC at 8:00 am. The class will travel to Tahlequah to visit the Cherokee Heritage Center.  Students should bring money for lunch.  The dress for the day is spirit dress. Since we will be outside on this tour, students are advised to wear a warm jacket (gloves and a hats are also suggested). The students should arrive back to campus by 3:00 pm.
